Jazz workshop for children

Saturday, August 12, 2017
The Holistic Music School is offering music workshops next week.

The Holistic Music School is offering music workshops next week, as part of its mission to develop creativity and social, emotional and physical skills in children from five to 18 years old. Its Atelier (Arts Workshop) programme runs until August 18.

Workshops will feature several T&T jazz educators, musicians and artists, including Rellon Brown (trumpet); Everald “Redman” Watson (percussion); Seth Escalante (guitar); Joshua Pasqual (trombone); Randell Adams (trumpet); Khaffi Beckles (visual art); and Nadine Eversley (photography). Trained apprentices will instruct students.

This year’s Atelier theme is Holistic Jazz, and participants will explore ABRSM Jazz and Jazz in Calypso. (ABRSM is the UK’s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the world’s leading provider of music exams, offering assessments to more than 630,000 candidates in 93 countries every year.)

The workshop next week will also introduce students to the art of Romare Bearden and to the photography of William Gottlieb.

Dr Patricia Dardaine-Ragguet established Atelier in 1997 to engage students in positive, holistic, character-building arts programmes. Dardaine-Ragguet is an administrator, holistic educator and musician. She says she designed the 2017 Atelier curriculum to excite and inspire current and future jazz musicians in local primary and secondary schools. She says age-appropriate concepts will be introduced in a relaxed and interdisciplinary workshop setting.

She says about the new workshop: “Holistic Music School is indeed thrilled to explore the ABRSM Jazz Syllabus (launched in 1999) alongside improvisation/jazz in calypso, jazz art and photography.

“While our school appreciates the value of a classical music repertoire, we also acknowledge that a growing number of young musicians want to study jazz and calypso genres, also known as Holistic Jazz. What a marvelous celebration of our Atelier’s 20th anniversary.”
