No bail for man on gun, ammo, drug charges
A 22-year-old El Socorro vendor who was allegedly held with three guns, ammunition and over seven kilogrammes of marijuana in South Trinidad was refused bail when he appeared in court on Tuesday. Shane Ali appeared before Magistrate Margaret Alert in Siparia Magistrates Court charged with three offences, including possession of three guns, ammunition and marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
Ali was arrested on Monday during an anti-crime exercise led by Cpl Mervyn George of the Fyzabad Police Station.
During the exercise, the officers allegedly observed Ali off-loading items from a pirogue at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche. The police searched Ali and allegedly found 15 packets of marijuana, two pistols loaded with magazines and a Smith and Wesson revolver in his possession. The marijuana weighed 7.92 kilogrammes and has a street value of $79,200. Ali was charged by PC Mario Rampersad of the South Western Division Task Force.
The exercise was coordinated by Snr Supt Adams, Supt Phillip, Insp Nemai and supervised by Sgt Ali, Sgt Ablacksingh and Cpl Singh.
Although Ali is a first-time offender, prosecutor Sgt Starr Jacob objected to bail based on the prevalence of firearm offences as well as the number of guns and marijuana allegedly found in Ali’s possession.
The magistrate advised Ali of his right to apply to a judge in chambers for bail and adjourned the matter to August 7.
