Leslie Figaro, the long-serving president of the T&T Rugby Football Union (TTRFU), has stepped down, ending a 10-year reign in charge of the sport.

His decision came at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday.

During his tenure, the sport of rugby participated in every regional tournament organised by the Rugby Americas North (RAN) culminating with Senior Women’s 10s National Team which defeated the United States South to become the champions at the 2017 RAN Women’s 10-A-Side Tournament in Miami, Florida.

Under Figaro, the TTRFU also successfully hosted two RAN Men’s Under 19 15-A Side Tournaments in 2013 and 2014, as well as the RAN Senior Men’s and Women’s 7-A-Side Tournament last year, which drew plaudits from all that attended.

Off the field, Figaro guided the TTRFU to becoming incorporated under the Companies Act, and as the administrators led it to be one of the premier sports in T&T. Last year the TTRFU was edged out by Archery for the best -performing administration award at the First Citizens Sports Foundation Awards.

The sport is now one of 14 being recognised by the Sport Company of T&T. In a release on Tuesday Figaro was praised by his executive committee for his commitment and dedication to ensuring the sport was properly managed, and that athletes receive all the benefits derived from the sport.

His executives described him as a hands-on president and leader, who was always in contact with the key players in the sport, such as World Rugby, RAN, SporTT, Ministry of Sport & Youth Affairs, and the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) to ensure the sport got results.
