A funny and tremendously exciting story, seizing your attention on every page, JESUS is an inspiring tale of Jesus’ struggle with divinity, spirituality and the human. condition. In the bible we know of Jesus from birth in the Nativity scenes, at age 12 in the temple in Jerusalem and then you don’t see him until he’s 30 and up to his death. For those 18 years he has been missing. Author Deepak Chopra depicts his version of what may have happened during that lost eighteen years. As said by Chopra, in no way he meant to contradict Jesus’ teachings, but he imagined how he arrived at them. This is a story of a young man’s journey. A journey to greatness. It’s a story about the transformation of an insightful, confident young man into the son of God. Jesus himself is uneasy with these signs but others are drawn to him and seek to possess him for their own purposes.
The story tells of his encounter with Judas, who wants to use Jesus for the purpose of inspiring his own band of Jewish followers in their fight against the Romans. Mary Magdalene, on the other hand, falls in love with him and desires him for her own fulfilment. He struggles with what they each want from him and being tempted by what they have to offer. Through them, Jesus learns and witnesses the obstacles and imperfections of human nature and factors, both external and within that prevent many from successfully pursuing a relationship with God. He travels and spends time with holy men seeking truth. He believes in saving the world as opposed to any one group of people. He struggles with concepts of good and evil. He learns that one must be free of the SELF in order to attain God consciousness and allow God to work through him.
Jesus encounters a mysterious teacher, which transformed my thinking and challenged my own perception of life and spirituality. He tells Jesus, “Only someone who can see the demons as part of God is free. Good and evil dissolve. The veil drops away, and all you see is divine light – inside, outside, everywhere.” He opens Jesus’ mind and he comes to see the spiritual power in the surrendering of the ego. This book identifies the greatness that lurks in all of us and in a way challenges us to embark upon our own journeys to enlightenment. A truly powerful book, Chopra expresses a similar depiction in his novel, Buddha, carrying the same subtitle ‘A Story of Enlightenment’. It will push your boundaries and challenge what you have been taught and know of Jesus, but if you wish to see Christianity in a new light and religion on a whole, give JESUS a read and consider BUDDHA while you’re at it.
